Instead of Casting On stitches to create a sleeve, f. ex., you can create the starting row by picking up the stitches in the "ladders" between the first and 2nd st on the rows - the rate is normally 3 to 4, the BLUE dot notes the "ladders" to start next sequence of 3 sts.
